BOARD OF DIRECTORS

CHAIR - HELEN BEREZANSKY (C.H.R.P., S.H.R.P.)

Helen is President and CEO of Bermik Human Resources Services Inc. and has worked in the human resources industry for most of her career. She has managed human resources programs and services in a variety of industries such as: Ontario Government, Aerospace, Not-for-profit organizations, Manufacturing, Health Care, etc. She is also a Director on the Board of Directors of Community Care East York, in addition to being a past board member at Crossroads International. Helen is of Ukrainian heritage and she has lived in Bloor West Village in Toronto, Ontario for most of her adult life. She sang in the Ukrainian Choir Dibrova from the age of sixteen and after taking a lengthy sabbatical, she has returned to singing with the Levada Women’s Choir. Helen has recently been appointed as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Ukrainian Youth Ensembles.

VICE-CHAIR - DR. JARSOLAW GROD

Jaroslaw Grod earned his Doctor of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in 1977 and is a Fellow of the College of Chiropractic Sciences. He has practiced for over twenty-five years and has held various senior positions as vice-president and registrar in professional associations.

He has served on numerous provincial health commissions and is a former professor and chair of the Diagnosis Department of the Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCUHS). He has also served as a Director on the Board of the Ontario Chiropractic Association and the Osteoporosis Society of Canada. He is still involved in research and evidence-based health care.

Jaroslaw is a Certified Association Executive. He is published in chiropractic and medical peer-reviewed journals and was a Professor and Director of Continuing Education at CMCC.

Jaroslaw’s involvement in the Ukrainian Community includes years of membership in the Ukrainian Youth Association (SUM). He is a past president of SUM (Toronto branch). He was president of the SUM orchestra, Baturyn, under the conductorship of Maestro Wasyl Kardash from 1972 to 1979 and travelled with Baturyn throughout North America and Europe.

He has been an election observer in Ukraine in 2004. Jaroslaw is also a member of the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association (UCCLA). In 2006 he received the Province of Ontario 10-year Volunteer Service Award for his work with the Ukrainian Bloor West Village Ukrainian Festival.

WALTER HONTAR

TREASURER - IHOR MULKEWYTCH

Ihor worked for the Canada Revenue Agency as a Tax Auditor and also taught various business courses at Sheridan and Humber Colleges for a period of twenty years. Since 2001 Ihor has been operating an accounting and tax practice under the name Accounting Plus Tax Solutions.

He sings with The Canadian Bandurist Ensemble and is on their Executive Committee in the financial capacity. Also, he is on the Executive Committee in the financial capacity with The Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Federation.

Ihor is a member of The Knights of Columbus – Sheptytsky Council.

He was a team leader of observers in Ukraine for the elections of 2004 and 2007. Presently, he is on the Planning Committee in the financial capacity for the 2010 presidential elections in Ukraine.

ORYSIA PERUN

In her youth Orysia Perun was a member of a variety of Church and Ukrainian organizations and spent many years as an active member of SUM and Dibrova Choir. Orysia had a most successful career as an educator working with the Toronto District School Board. She was a Principal of four schools during her career and ended her time at the Board as a Supervising Principal of Special Education.

She is now retired and enjoys spending time with family and friends. In her retirement she enjoys playing tennis and golf, going to the theatre and travelling. She is a member of “Friends of Dzherelo” a volunteer group supporting the Dzherelo Rehabilitation Centre in Lviv.

Orysia is looking forward to being on the Board of Directors of UMA, and giving back to a community which provided her many wonderful experiences.

SECRETARY - OLESIA ROMANKO (Diploma in Early Childhood Education for the Developmentally Handicapped)

Olesia worked for the Ontario Government, Manulife Financial and Alliance Atlantis in the area of Records Management. At present, she is employed by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation as Manager of Records and Information Management.

While with the Province of Ontario, Olesia worked in the following areas: Ministry of Colleges and Universities, Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations, Ministry of Housing, Ministry of Labour, and Management Board. During her tenure with the Ontario Government, Olesia was a participating member on a variety of Management Board policy/guideline sub-committees: Visual Identify, Records and Forms Management, Plain Language and Affirmative Action. In the last ten years with the Ontario Government, Olesia also served as Director on the Executive for the Ontario Record’s Council.

Her community involvement included volunteering with Big Brothers of Toronto and Karpaty Ukrainian Soccer League. In 1995, Olesia co-founded the not-for-profit organization, Sonechko Day Care Centre.
